by Dr. Oakley Smith

Injection rhinoplasty also known as Liquid Rhinoplasty is becoming increasingly popular, nowadays everybody knows that dermal injectables fillers can enhance the shape and appearance of your nose and balance your facial harmony without surgery! It is possible to make significant improvements to the shape of your nose with no surgery, using a non-invasive technique with a very easy recovery and no downtime! With the use of injectable dermal fillers, Dr. Smith can help patients achieve attractive results with a non-surgical rhinoplasty.

What is less well understood is the nose is different for the rest of the face. It’s more difficult to achieve improvements, the changes need to be more precise, the anatomy is more complex and dangerous. Many clinics refuse to perform injection rhinoplasty for these reasons. Here is a place you don’t want inexperienced injectors or practitioners with limited knowledge of the intricate structures of the nose. The nose is more difficult and dangerous than the face to inject. The arteries have connections to the back of the eye and there have been situations where someone has become blind because of this. This highlights the need for a knowledgeable and experienced injector. Furthermore the nasal skin is at higher risk than the face for losing its blood supply from injections. Having an experienced injector who knows the anatomy of the nose reduces this risk.

What is a Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty (Nose Job)?

Non-surgical rhinoplasty or also known as Liquid Rhinoplasty was created through the innovative work of experienced cosmetic surgeons. Well over ten years ago Dr Oakley Smith was the first in Toronto to start performing this method of nasal enhancement. Until recently, rhinoplasty was only performed using surgical techniques— making incisions, removing cartilage and breaking nasal bones. The downsides of surgical rhinoplasty are the recovery time, expense, potential for complications, and the trauma to the delicate tissues of the nose.

Non-surgical rhinoplasty by contrast uses dermal injectables, fillers such as Teosyal® Ultra Deep and Botox to enhance and improve the nose’s shape without trauma of surgery. When we age the nose can begin to sag and become more hooked, this happens around the age of 40, which can make your whole face appear droopy. Botox can help by lifting the nose. For this type of treatment an injection of Botox at the base of the nose (between the nostrils), which can release the depressor muscle that pulls the nose downward, making the nasal tip appear more lifted. Like surgical rhinoplasty, non-surgical rhinoplasty can:

  • Improve your nose’s shape and facial harmony
  • Lift and enhance the shape of the nasal tip
  • Correct nasal asymmetry
  • Sculpt the profile of the nasal bridge
  • Smooth out nasal bumps or irregularities

Liquid Rhinoplasty is non-invasive, there’s no cutting, no visible scarring, and there’s very little to no pain, nor downtime for recovery. Non-surgical rhinoplasty helps to correct minor problems in the shape, size, or proportion of the nose that are causing significant issues in terms of a patient’s overall facial appearance. However the one thing it can’t correct is the size of your nose. In fact by adding volume it creates a bigger nose. However in good candidates, this isn’t a problem. Therefore choosing an experienced injector is obviously a critical element.

Other Reasons to Consider Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty

Non-surgical rhinoplasty is not permanent like surgical rhinoplasty. This means that if you are unsatisfied with your results you can receive touch-ups or develop a new treatment plan. Injectables are delivered with a fine syringe instead of a surgical scalpel, so they can be used more precisely and with more versatility to achieve a finer, more exact result. This is an important difference between surgery and injections in the nose. Injections are more accurate than surgery. Case in point, injections are often used after surgery for a more precise result than surgery achieved. However, surgery when successful can very often achieve greater overall improvement than injections alone. Finally, only a minority of people have nasal anatomy which makes them good candidates for injection rhinoplasty.

Since it’s a minor procedure, it can be done right here in the office. No topical cream anesthetic is needed. You remain awake during the procedure. Your nose is cleaned with alcohol wipes first. The injections take about twenty minutes. You can monitor the improvements with a hand mirror as we proceed. It’s easy, convenient and has minimal disruption to your life. There’s no downtime, unlike surgery.

How Long Does a Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty Last?

There is no exact answer because the duration will depend on different factors such as: the type of filler used and the amount of filler used, the individual patient’s body and its unique rate of metabolizing the injectables, and what part of the nose is treated.
